Between Black and White is a portfolio of compositions created during my time at the University of Sheffield. Between the very end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014.

Having just scored the music for Inherit the Wind, a performance by the Sheffield University Theatre Company. The techniques I had used to create that music were fresh in my mind - most notably LFO driven bass, which was dominating a lot of the dubstep & dubstep-influenced music at the time.

In stylistic contrast, Between Black and White was a continuation of the techniques and style formed in both my previous compositions "Glimmer" and "Sticks & Stones".

The album consists of a dense collage of electroacoustic manipulations, which would occasionally break out into rhythmic sections. These were particularly inspired by glitch aesthetic and the pieces "Puzzle" By Robert Normandeau & "Tables Clear" By Paul Lansky.

While at the time I considered the hybridised elements as especially distinctive features of the album, in the decade that has followed I consider these to simply be parts of the broad acousmatic palette.

The sometimes maximalist nature of the pieces in Between Black and White are often offset with introspective droning material - sometimes emerging from the structure, other times underpinning the whole piece.

While the playful tone of Rhiddimitation is immediately disarming, it is possibly the final track (Sine On/Sign Off) which is the most subversive (Perhaps drawing from the intense, short composition time & being composed at the tail of such an intense period of composition).

Sine On/Sign Off draws inspiration from minimal process pieces, a ramp is set on the rate for an LFO beginning at the DAW's minimum value and slowly increasing over time. T
The piece also subverts in it's audacious use of volume - consisting of drastic quietness over much of it's extended introduction. Truly a piece that, despite it's often more minimal nature, demands specific and active listening in an appropriately quiet environment.

A decade on from the creation of this album, I am still quite proud of it. It is easily the most ambitious project I have undertaken to date.
