about

Glimmer was first composed in 2014 and felt like a landmark piece for me in it's exploration of form. It is fairly unique in my acousmatic works in that it uses a particularly broad palette of sources - an approach I use less frequently in following works (The other exception being Sine On/Sign Off from Between Black & White).

This piece also formed the basis of my interest in hybridised music (combining Electroacoustic/Acousmatic techniques with aspects and aesthetics more common in popular music). This became an underlying theme of Between Black & White and remained an interest of mine for several years.

Looking back on Glimmer now I find there is a tangible excitement in the piece, that is a little less refined and restrained than the pieces that directly followed it. The resultant palette from the various synthesis techniques that were employed along with the varied sound sources fed into them is eclectic and exciting - the sense of exploration that was present throughout it's creation feels tangible to me when listening to it.

The piece is named for the shimmering qualities of the opening sound, but was also a nod to the Spyro The Dragon series.
